The Ant Fern, Lecanopteris sinuosa, forms a pretty network of green, leafy, intertwining stolons, and upright, yellow green leaves. Though Ant Ferns are not carnivorous, ants live within the hollow chambers of the rhizomes. The enlarged rhizomes serve as homes, tunnels and dry protection for the ants, and in return the plants get nutrients from the ant wastes and decay. L. sinuosa is an epiphyte fern naturally growing upon the trunks and crevices of trees. It prefers the cooler, drier, partially sunny conditions on loose draining substrate such as fine fir bark chips. It is rapidly growing that spreads nicely, and can be easily divided. It is a curious and interesting plant.

Ant Ferns are shipped in a 4" pot. Photographs are representative of species, and not the specific plant shipped.

Unique and Hardy Plant

Purchased the ant fern back in March. Potted it as recommended with the addition of fir bark chips and set it on a windowsill between a very large Ceropegia ampliata and a large fern. Kind of "forgot" about it being there, though watered it every time I watered the ampliata. A couple of weeks ago, despite its larger companions somewhat shading it out, I noticed it was sending out a couple new leaves. Gave it my apologies for my "neglect," then moved it under some grow lights, which is where it is going to stay. Now it has really taken off. Clearly a "forgiving" plant.

Excellent Specimen

My Ant Fern arrived in excellent condition and must have traveled well. It acclimated without incident and is thriving in my 'carnivorous habitat'. Though not carnivorous it seems to like its company. I look forward to watching it grow.
