Ease to Grow: Easy.
Dormancy: Recommended
Native Range: Peat Bogs of Eastern and Northern North America.

The Purple Pitcher Plant, Sarracenia purpurea, is low growing with short, stout traps, often showing burgundy color and red veins in full sun. In the winter it frequently turns a gorgeous deep reddish purple color. It tends to clump and form colonies, about 4+ feet across. Traps hold their color through the winter and for nearly 2 years. It is a fragrant, early spring bloomer, growing deep red blossoms on 12 inch scapes that flower well before the new traps develop. Flower stalks and sepals last through the year, resembling green daffodils. It is native, in several varieties, from Florida to Newfoundland. Some of its more colorful common names are: Devil's Boots, Side-Saddle Flower and Hunter's Cup. In colonial homeopathic medicine it was believed to offer relief from small pox.

Plants are shipped bare-root, wrapped in damp sphagnum moss. In it's dormant season, it will be shipped as a dormant rhizome with trimmed off pitchers. Photographs are representative of the species, and not the specific plant shipped. Veining and coloration may vary because these are a seed strain.

Plant Type: Perennial, cold temperate.
Soil: Upper Bog Mix or General CP Mix.

Arrived in great condition

The plant arrived quickly, in great condition, carefully packaged for travel. It has already shown growth and looks beautiful.

So impressed with what came… but…

After reading reviews I was worried I’d get teeny babies, even ordering Lg and Med. ( I ordered in May) But, I got full pitchers!!! Only 2 of 11 were in anything less than clumps of 5+!! I had 2 a little sad looking with 2 pitchers each. The only thing confusing was size.. in truth, not much size difference b/w lg and md. Root structure as more robust in lg, but not by much. They were packaged beautifully and all looking pretty good on arrival!! I am new to this, but wanting to do carnivorous plants with kids for awhile!! Read up first… basic knowledge has 1:1 peat/horticultural sand ratio.. enclosed material, 1:2, some resources I found 1:5. I guess we’ll see. Also.. you need to have a supply of distilled /rain water ready… they don’t do well with tap water!!! So far a great first week!! A wonderful addition to plants for the children and adults to learn from!!
