Nepenthes albomarginata has slender graceful pitchers. The pitcher color vary from purple, red or green, but always has the characteristic white band below the peristome. This is made of hairlike structures or trichomes that attract insects, especially termites, that often fall into the trap to become a meal. N. albomarginata grows naturally in the shade of relatively dense, damp, woody vegetation. In cultivation it does well in moderately bright indirect light. Reduce watering in winter. It is a great house plant, that can be grown outdoors in the warm weather. It is excellent in the terrarium, and suitable for beginners.

A Good Way to Grow Your Collection

Nepenthes albomarginata is the latest of several Nepenthes species which I have purchased, being excited by the diversity in this group of plants. The shipping was typical, in it's own enclosed mini-terrarium, not good for long-term growth but very sound for shipping and safe for at least a couple of days if one can't immediately get to it. Of course I like their carnivorous adaptation, but the variations one can find within it are quite impressive. At the same time, at least initially they seem to be pretty slow growing, with the result that older plants can be prohibitively expensive, especially for one who has worked with plants for their livelihood. Though starting with small plants can sometimes be frustrating, at least these different species are already developing pitchers even though they have a ways to grow. I'm very pleased with the majority that I have purchased so far, and hope that there will be more species, especially with some different shapes and adaptations in pitcher design.
