Sarracenia rubra

$18.95

Ease to Grow: Easy
Dormancy: Suggested
Native Range: Wet Pocosins of coastal Southeastern North America
Zones: 6-9 (5-9)

The Sweet Trumpet, Sarracenia rubra is medium height with traps that resemble S. alata or a narrower, shorter S. flava; often displaying copper coloration. It has a network of fine red reticulated veins (vertical veins connected by fine smaller veins), unlike the pin stripe veins in S. alata. The upper part of the tubes contain faint areoles (windows). The hood is twice as long as it is wide, and grows close to the tube opening. Spring traps tend to grow with a curve. Its best traps are in late Summer and Fall. S. rubra is a prolific grower, spreading quickly and forming dense clusters of tubes. It prefers open, very wet conditions, but readily adapts to a variety of bog conditions, including tolerance of drier conditions. The distinguishing characteristic of this plant is its small, red, sweetly fragrant flowers. It produces more flowers than any other Sarracenia. They generally bloom from April to May before the pitchers fully develop. Flower stalks and sepals last through the year, resembling reddish green daffodils. It is an excellent addition to any bog garden.

Plants are shipped bare-root, wrapped in damp sphagnum moss. In it's dormant season, it will be shipped as a dormant rhizome with trimmed off pitchers. Photographs are representative of the species, and not the specific plant shipped. Veining and coloration may vary because these are a seed strain.

Height: 8" - 12"
Plant Type: Perennial, Temperate
Soil: Upper Bog Mix or All Purpose Mix
Light: Bright to partial bright indoors, full sun to partial sun outdoors
Use: Grows well in the bog garden, greenhouse and indoors.

Sarracenia rubra

I have spent $450 on carnivorous plants in the past month and I was very disappointed that this order cost me $25 and arrived the way it did. For them bare root means the plant is “alive” but that’s it. I didn’t get a plant I got something resembling something alive and it’s august which is still growing season. I also requested that it be a greener version and I got one 10x as red as another one in one of the pictures that someone posted in the review section. Buyer beware on this one. Will it grow to be healthy? Maybe, maybe not. But good luck enjoying your plant for a while if 2/3 of it is missing

Two happy plants

I received two Sarracenia Rubra this last week. I was attracted by their yellow color--one very different from the purples and reds!! I potted both and put them under lights and they are growing like crazy. They are noticeably growing an inch or more per day. I highly recommend these to any Carnivorous Plant Fans!! Also great job in wrapping and shipping the plants as always!! Many thanks!

Love the plants

The plants arrived in a dormant state and were well packaged. They were about an inch tall when they arrived but reached 4 inches within a week and are growing noticeably daily. The email sent by the grower arrived ahead of the delivery and provided useful tips for soil and watering. This is my first time caring for carnivorous plants and so far it’s going very well. As small as they are, I can already see the hollow tube shapes that will become the pitcher. Once they are established, I plan to get a few more.
