The Water Spider Orchid, Habenaria repens, has a spire of small green flowers that resemble spiders. It is common in peat wetlands, growing as a semi aquatic, in and out of the water's edge. It is often overlooked because the green flowers blend in well with the long green lance shaped leaves.  Each flower cluster contains 6-20+ small (3/4") blossoms that have finely divided lips that spread out, looking remarkably like small green spiders. It flowers late Summer through Fall and emits a strong evening fragrance. It can be a robust, and vigorous grower self dividing from runners along the stems, especially when wet. It often grows with Pickerel Weed. Seeds are very fine and can be a challenge to germinate. It is a warm temperate plant and does not tolerate a frost well. In the home or greenhouse it will grow throughout the year.  Water with rain/distilled water, they are sensitive to mineral buildup. It spreads nicely and grows well among pitcher plants.

Our plants are not collected from the wild, and are propagated from stolon divisions of plants in our collection.
Spider Orchid size refers to age of plants. Small (1 year), medium (2-3 years), large (4+ years).

Water Spider Orchid

Healthy, sizable plants

Bog orchids really grow much faster than most of the more typical hobby orchids. These will give me blooms possibly as early as this season and I am impressed with their shipping size. The very newly planted orchids are towards the back of the form, nearly in line with between the the barrel planters. There are 3 of them.

Water Spider Orchid

The plant arrived on time and was packed very well.
The USPS box had been crushed but, the plant was fine.
The plant arrived healthy and has already put out new growth.
I have attempted to grow immature Habenaria repens twice in my 10 gallon black water aquarium by covering the rhizomes under the gravel twice before which may have been in error as both attempts failed.
Too many factors to determine why the failures.
The orchids grew and produced new leaves “melted” which is probably due to water parameter changes.
I bought a mature orchid this time and I am letting the plant float at the surface of the water.
Time will tell whether this individual orchid will survive and thrive in an aquarium environment.
I have also ordered and received other aquatic plants.
I am 100% satisfied with the quality of all of the plants I have received and 100% satisfied with Carnivorous Plant Nursery, their customer service and the entire staff.
