Utricularia inflata

Ease to Grow: Easy
Dormancy: Yes, but not required. Forms turions over winter.
Native Range: Southeatern United States
Zones: 4-7 (3-9)

Utricularia inflata, Swollen Bladderwort, is a large growing, perennial, aquatic bladderwort with distinctive radial floats. The floats divide at the ends and branch often bearing multiple traps. It grows suspended in the boggy waters with no roots.  Its leaves are finely divided, and interspersed with numerous bladders about 1/8", which turn dark from devouring infusoria, including mosquitoes. It prefers dark, tea colored, boggy waters rich in tannins.  It does best in full sun, growing under and among emergent aquatic plants, such as water lilies, frogbit and pickerel weed. Its flowers reach above the water from May to November. They are large and bright yellow.  As Fall approaches, it forms turions (winter buds), which settle to the bottom, and help it survive winters. If it is grown in temperatures above 55°F (12°C), it will continue to grow through the winter. It can become weedy and invasive in water bogs. This is a great plant for the garden bog pool, and will help reduce the mosquito population.

Plants shipped as a 2-4+" sprig with one or more growing tips. In it's dormant season, it will be shipped as a dormant turion.

Length: 18+"
Plant Type: Perennial, temperate
Soil: Bog Water
Light: Bright to partial bright indoors, partial sun outdoors
Use: Grows well indoors and greenhouse.  Great for helping to control mosquitoes.

I can't get these aquatic variety to last

The description is accurate. The actual plant is underwhelming for $10 per sample. For a plant that can be a nuisance vegetation in some bodies of water, and at $10 a peice, don't be fooled. Scroll to the bottom and read the size of what is being sent. I bought two, and I havent seen them since I placed the finger-sized cuttings in my pond.

Great place for aquatic CPs

I set up a beautiful aquatic CP aquarium and purchased all my plants from Carnivorous Plant Nursery. Utricularia inflata was one of my companion plants in the system. Order arrived quickly and in great condition. All plants are already showing growth. Will definitely purchase again from this nursery and would highly recommend.

Interesting plants

Delivered plants were in line with what I paid for. Definitely not like the photo yet. They came with hardly any bladders but has developed several in the short time I've had.

It is my first time handling aquatic plants much less Bladderworts. I was a bit nervous. What was pictured caught my attention but what showed up blew my mind with it's deep green color, form, and the size of what I had received. I was expecting a small twig of an item yet I got a rather large specimen. I am more than satisfied and I can't wait to add it to my mini aquatic bog in my window follow me on IG @TuBogShakur for more updates as I continue my journey into the #boglife
