Sarracenia x Red Bug is a stout cultivar with rufous red pitchers and rounded red hoods. The pitchers are laced with fine dark red veins on a dark green background, and covered with distinct fine hairs creating a velvety appearance. The pitcher tops are slightly swollen and the narrow hood arches over the trap opening. Nectar glands around the lip attract many insects. It is very vigorous and readily forms dense colonies. It prefers open, sunny boggy conditions, and holds its color into the frost. The small flowers are very numerous, red and spicy fragrant. They generally bloom mid-season. Red Bug will add rich interest in your bog garden, collection or tall terrarium. Red Bug originated as a single plant that was a natural hybrid S. rubra wherryi x rubra rubra. It was selected for its delightful features and cloned in tissue culture to become one of the cultivars of the Bug Series, compact/stout growers, from the Horticultural Program at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Even better in person

I had wanted a red sarracenia and not quite sure why I settled on this one. However it arrived healthy with multiple pitchers! They even started to get to work ridding my backyard of flies while I was potting up the rest of my order. It’s a really lovely maroon red color, and seems to be doing well. I feel like it does look a lot nicer in person than through the photos here or the one I took. Again, I really like the red coloring on these. There was one small immature pitcher that did get damaged in transit, but the rest of the plant is fine. It should replace that in no time at all. Especially with the pitchers that are almost half full of bugs. Should have plenty of nutrition. Great packaging again 5/5 stars. Definitely consider buying more from this nursery again!
