Drosera capensis, or the Cape Sundew, is available for sale with Carnivorous Plant Nursery. One of the easiest of all carnivorous plants to grow, it is medium-size with long strap-like leaves, loaded with red tentacles. It has a nice overall green and red appearance and glistens brightly in the sunlight. Insects are lured to the plant and get mired in the sticky dew of the tentacles. The leaves slowly roll over on to the prey in about 30 minutes, creating an effective digestive pouch around the victim. Digestion takes a few days and the leaf uncurls to leave the prey remains behind. It is a tropical plant growing year round, as long as the conditions are warm and bright. In cooler temperatures it stops growing, but holds its traps. Here at our Nursery (Zone 6) it grows in some of the outdoor bog boxes, dies back in the Fall and re-emerges from the roots in Spring. It tolerates a wide range of growing conditions, but prefers open, sunny, boggy conditions in peaty soils. The flowers are a rosy-pink on tall, multi-flowered scapes. One or two flowers open each day for several weeks. It can flower at different times of the year, but more profusely in the summer months. It generously produces seeds that can be sown immediately or stored in cool, dry conditions for a year or more. The Drosera capensis plant comes in many forms: red, white, narrow leaf, broad leaf, wide leaf, and giant. All are unofficial cultivars. It can become a wonderful "weed" in your carnivorous plant collection, and is an excellent terrarium plant. It is easy to grow and is a great beginner's plant. This selection comes from seed, and will show some natural variations. For maximum effect use multiple plants in a 6" pot. Plants vary in size from 1.5"-6+" depending upon availability.

Typically plants are shipped bare-root, wrapped in damp sphagnum moss. Photographs are representative of species, and not the specific plant shipped.

Height: 2" - 6"
Plant Type: Perennial, tropical
Soil: Lower Bog Mix or General CP Mix
Light: Bright indoors, full sun to partial sun outdoors
Use: Grows well in the protected bog garden, greenhouse and indoors. It is an excellent terrarium plant

Arrived very health and carefully packaged/shipped. Super happy to add a classic to the collection. Plants had good color and size to them. Can't wait to see them thrive. The team was very thorough and helpful with any vare questions and directions. Definitely going to order from them again.

Small but good

I do recommend this sundew, just got it upfront at the nursery and is very bright pink and nicely colored. The sundew did get a bit beat up on the dive home but it is still looking good. 👍

Mixed review

My two plants - a sundew and a King Henry Venus flytrap - took 7 or 8 days to get to me in MN. They were well-wrapped, and that ship time wasn't supposed to be so long - I think 2 weekends were involved. The flytrap is doing fine, but the sundew looked worse when I planted them both, and now it's not doing well. Before ordering again I would confirm that they can arrive in 3-4 days, not 7-8. I'm sorry I don't have a photo. They were a birthday gift and live in Iowa now.

Dead plants/poor shipping/small

Maybe give warning about actual size of plants. There is a big difference between 2" and 6". Also, shipping was delayed because of USPS system I'm assuming and my plants showed up days late, left in a hot locker, and were black/half dead when I got them. The drosera capensis was wrapped in a wet paper towel and was the size of my thumb. The Venus fly trap had all closed and half were blackened. I put both in new carnivorous plant soil and I don't think will matter. Wasted money trying 5o order online.
