Ease to Grow: Easy
Dormancy: No
Native Range: Peaty wetlands of the Cape region of South Africa
Zones: 8-9 (7-10)

The Nestle-leafed Sundew, Drosera nidiformis, is a medium size, tropical with green leaves, cover with red tentacles that glisten nicely. It's similar in appearance to D. intermedia, but larger and tropical. It does a great job of catching insects with leaves that roll over onto its prey. D. nidiformis grows year round and prefers growing in open, sunny, boggy conditions in peaty soils. The flowers are pink, and one or two flowers open each day for several weeks. It flowers profusely in the summer months with lighter flowering throughout the year. It is self-fertile, and generously produces seeds that can be sown immediately or stored in cool, dry conditions for a year or more. D. nidiformis can become a wonderful "weed" in your carnivorous plant collection, and is an excellent terrarium plant. It is easy to grow and is a great beginner's plant. This selection comes from seed, and will show some natural variations.

Plants are shipped bare-root, wrapped in damp sphagnum moss. Photographs are representative of species, and not the specific plant shipped.

Height: 1" - 2+"
Plant Type: Perennial, Subtropical
Soil: Lower Bog Mix or All Purpose Mix
Light: Bright indoors, full sun to partial sun outdoors
Use: Grows well in the protected bog garden, greenhouse and indoors. It is an excellent terrarium plant.

Small but tough

Real-talk: I was sure this one was dead upon arrival. There was no green left anywhere - just sad, red or black leaves. I trimmed the black leaves and left the red ones, in hopes they would be enough to get the plant to new production, then gave her lots of light and humidity. It took a week, and its producing tiny leaves, but - like Frankenstein's monster - IT'S ALIIIIVE! Every time a leaf finishes unfurling, i catch a little gnat and give it a meal. Hopefully, in a few weeks, it'll get back to producing the larger leaves it was shipped with and be dewy enough to catch its own meals. (The straw is there for easier bottom-pot-watering, in case anyone was wondering. I'm definitely weird, but there is always a purpose to my weird haha).
