Drosera filiformis floridana x sp. Lantau Island

$13.95

Ease to Grow: Easy
Dormancy: Yes
Parental Native Range: Florida and Hong Kong
Zones: 6-8 (5-9)

An outstanding, eye-catching, medium-sized sundew hybrid, Drosera filiformis floridana x sp. Lantau Island. It forms a large rosette with long paddle-shaped leaves of deep reddish orange color. Tentacles are numerous with large sparkling "dew drops". It is a vigorous grower and spreads readily. It prefers open, sunny, boggy conditions in peaty soils. The blossoms are sterile and pink on multi-flowered scapes. Typically there are several scapes at a time, and they are long lasting.  It can flower at different times of the year, but more profusely in the summer months. Allow for a winter rest for best growth. This hybrid is an excellent little terrarium plant. It is easy to grow, and is a great beginner's plant. This selection comes from leaf cuttings, and are genetically identical to the parent. D. sp. Lantau Island is a D. oblanceolata x spatulata cross.

Plants are shipped bare-root, wrapped in damp sphagnum moss. Photographs are representative of species, and not the specific plant shipped.

Height: 2" - 3+"
Plant Type: Perennial, sub-tropical
Soil: Lower Bog Mix or All Purpose Mix
Light: Bright indoors, full sun to partial sun outdoors
Use: Grows well in the protected bog garden, greenhouse and indoors. It is an excellent terrarium plant.

3 Teeny, Tiny Plants for $46

I've ordered from Carnivorous Plant Nursery before and always been satisfied. This time, not so much. Granted, it's spring, and new plants are young and small, but if I had a 1" cube, all 3 plants, with roots, could easily have fit inside. They were that small. No pot. No medium. Three, well wrapped, labeled, itty bitty starts. For approx. $15 each, the expectation was to receive adult plants. Yes, they appeared healthy, but trying to outplant these very delicate starts is not inspiring. I've raised flytraps, sundews and pitcher plants for close to 10 years, and I'm not sure any will survive. If I lose even one, I'll probably not order from this supplier again. If all survive, I'll add a star to my rating, but will probably order elsewhere in the future. Just not worth it.

Thank you for sharing this feedback. The sundew in your photograph is just emerging from its winter resting form in early April (which is also the best time of year to transplant). These resting buds (hibernacula) are not a good representation of the size of the plant in Summer. By the end of the growing season they will be full sized, mature, flowering plants.
